Boris Akunin, a popular fiction writer in Russia, has been designated a foreign agent by the justice ministry due to his opposition to Moscow's war in Ukraine.

The designation carries negative connotations and requires individuals to identify themselves as foreign agents on social media and in publications, as well as subjecting them to financial reporting requirements.

Akunin's books have been removed from sale in Russia and other writers who have criticized the Ukraine war have received the same designation. [ more ]

Alsu Kurmasheva, a journalist for RFE/RL, has been recognized as a political prisoner by human rights group Memorial.

Kurmasheva was charged with failing to register as a "foreign agent" and faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison.
